Weekend Review for Week Ending 9th March

Premier Division League
Thurles Town left it late against BT Harps at Thurles Greyhound Stadium last Sunday before eventually emerging winners on a three nil score line. The sides were scoreless up to the 84th minute before Padraig Fogarty edged Thurles side ahead from close range after Eoin Dorney’s free kick effort rebounded off the crossbar. It was two nil in as many minutes when Tom Tierney set up Eoin Dorney who rounded the keeper to slot home and then man of the match Eoin Dorney wrapped it up for Thurles Town with a lobbed effort from outside the box in the 89th minute.

Cloughjordan had too much strength in depth for Rearcross last Sunday after recording an eight nil victory at the Cloughjordan venue. The game was over as a contest at the midway stage after the visiting side conceded six first half goals. Kevin Kennedy bagged a hat-trick on the day while Diarmuid Kennedy, Bryan Williams, Andy Brennan and PJ O’Brien were also on the scoresheet for the winners.

Nenagh AFC romped to a facile eight nil over Lough Derg in Ballina last Sunday.

First Division League
Roscrea ‘A’ had to battle all the way to secure a slender 2-1 win over Clodiagh Rangers ‘A’ in Drombane on Sunday afternoon. Ger Grant gave the home side an early lead, however Roscrea got back level ten minutes before the break when John Cordial was on target. It was tit for tat in the second half, however John Pio Fitzpatrick tapped home from close range with twenty minutes remaining which was to prove the difference on the day.

Borrisokane ‘A’ stay in the hunt for promotion with a hard earned one nil win over Ardcroney in Borrisokane on Sunday morning. An evenly contested opening half saw Ardcroney coming close later in the half, however Jamie Donnelly pulled off a fine save to deny the visitors. John Doyle edged the home team ahead on seventy minutes with a half volley from just inside the box. Ardcroney had the ball in the net near the end but the effort was disallowed for offside.

Borroway Rovers were on their travels to Portroe to play Arra Rovers and made the journey worthwhile with a comprehensive 7-2 win. The Thurles side laid the foundation in the opening half after hitting the hosts for three on trot thanks a David Burke brace in addition to a well worked effort from Keith Moore. A high scoring second half saw Damien Troy chip in with a hat-trick while Keith Moore was on target again for the visitors, Arra Rovers replied with goals from John Barry and Kevin O’Halloran.

Nenagh Celtic ‘B’ recorded a 3-2 win over Clonmore on Sunday afternoon. The Nenagh side were two up at the break thanks to a Lee Mitchell brace with Darren McGrath providing two assists. Nenagh Celtic were on the attack in the second half before Kevin Nevin sealed the win for the Hoops.

Kilcommon pushed title chasing Nenagh AFC ‘B’ all the way in Kilcommon last Sunday before succumbing to a narrow one nil defeat, the Blues bagged the only goal of tie on the hour mark.

Second Division League
Streamstown Celtic were crowned Second Division League champions with a facile ten nil win over a depleted Shannon Rangers in Ballinderry last Sunday, Gerry Larkin representing the NT&DL was in attendance to present the League Cup to the victorious team.

Holycross ‘A’ accounted for Portumna on a three nil score line at the away venue on Sunday morning. Philly Cullen netted the opener on the twenty minute mark, Callum O’Connor made it two nil six minutes later before Seanie Comerford clinched the win for the visitors on the stroke of full time.

Third Division League
Gurtagarry claimed maximum points over Holycross ‘B’ on a two nil score line in Glenbane last Sunday. Nicky Ryan put Gurtagarry one nil up with a superb strike, Ger Ryan got in on the action minutes later with a well taken goal to leave to way back for Holycross on this occasion.

Roscrea ‘B’ had too much firepower for Borrisokane ‘B’ on a seven nil score line. The hosts led four nil at the break with finishes from Stephen Murphy, Paul Brussells and Gavin Loughnane while the fourth came courtesy of an own goal. It was more of the same in the second half as Stephen Murphy scored two more to complete his hat-trick while Martin Loughnane completed the rout for Roscrea.

Sallypark ‘B’ and Rearcross ‘B’ played out a three all draw last Sunday in Rearcross, Jack O’Donnell scored twice for the visitors while an own goal accounted for the 3rd goal, James Deegan, Paul Murphy and an own goal make up the Rearcross tally.

Lough Derg ‘B’ secured a 5-3 away win over Noreside Celtic in this league fixture played in Montore. Noel McInerney and Keith Conway netted a brace apiece while Eric Conway was also on target for the Lakers.

Nora Kennedy Cup
BT Harps advanced in the Second Division Cup with a slender 2-1 extra time win over Ballymackey in Templemore last Sunday. BT Harps hit the front when James Kavanagh rattled the net but Denis Haverty pegged it back level with a well struck free kick. Dylan Loughnane crashed home the winner to send the Templemore side through to the semi-finals.

Youths League
Nenagh AFC Youths secured a crucial win over BT Harps on a slender one nil scoreline in Nenagh last Saturday, Ciaran O’Reilly scored the all-important goal for the Brickfield side.
